FAQ

What exactly is PPID/Cushing's disease in horses?

An endocrine condition impacting the pituitary gland, showing signs of increased thirst and urination, laminitis, and unusually long hair growth.

What is the mechanism of action of this medication?

Prascend has pergolide, a type of dopamine agonist that decreases the amount of adrenocorticotropic hormone ACTH, effectively treating symptomatic PPID.

How should Prascend tablets be stored?

Prascend tablets should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Store them out of reach of children and other animals.

Can Prascend be given with other medications?

Giving Prascend with another drug should always be consulted first by a veterinarian. Some drugs can interact with pergolide, thereby interfering in its action or even eliciting an adverse reaction.

Are there any bad side effects?

Anorexia, depression, and colic are possible side effects. Always follow the advice of a qualified veterinarian to ensure accurate and relevant diagnosis and treatment.

Is Prascend safe to give to pregnant mares?

The safety of Prascend has not been established in pregnant mares. Advice should be sought from your veterinarian before using.

How long after commencing administration will I start to notice improvement with my horse?

Timelines for improvement vary. Some cases will show the first signs of improvement within weeks, while all benefits may take a few months.

What should I do if I forget to give my horse a dose?

If you miss giving a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time for the next dose, you should skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed dose.

How shall I know if my horse will respond well to Prascend?

Look for signs of improvement that include an increase in water intake and hence urination; improved coat condition with extra energy. Regular checkups with the vet and blood tests can monitor the progress too.

What dietary changes should I implement once my horse is on Prascend?

There is no specific dietary change needed, and only a good quality forage together with a well-balanced diet can maintain general health. Your veterinarian may suggest some dietary changes concerning the condition of your horse.
